{"id":2709,"date":"2023-12-20T11:30:21","date_gmt":"2023-12-20T01:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wiselinkaccountants.com.au\/?p=2709"},"modified":"2024-05-14T14:35:41","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T04:35:41","slug":"deductions-for-gifts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wiselinkaccountants.com.au\/zh-hans\/deductions-for-gifts\/","title":{"rendered":"A deductible gift recipient\u00a0(DGR)-deductions for Christmas Gifts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"720\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1280 \/ 720;\" width=\"1280\" controls src=\"https:\/\/wiselinkaccountants.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/4fc6ab3acda1a3901f6b240948f27f81-3.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ato-Whenagiftordonationisdeductible\"><strong>When a gift or donation is deductible<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can only claim a tax deduction for a gift or donation to an organisation that has the status of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/individuals-and-families\/income-deductions-offsets-and-records\/deductions-you-can-claim\/gifts-and-donations#Whatisadeductiblegiftrecipient\">deductible gift recipient<\/a>&nbsp;(DGR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To claim a deduction, you must be the person that gives the gift or donation and it must meet the following 4&nbsp;conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It must be made to a DGR.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It must truly be a gift or donation \u2013 that is, you are voluntarily transferring money or property without receiving, or expecting to receive, any material benefit or advantage in return. A material benefit is something that has a monetary value.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It must be money or property \u2013 this can include financial assets such as shares.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It must comply with any relevant gift conditions \u2013 for some DGRs, the income tax law adds conditions affecting the types of deductible gifts they can receive.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DGRs sometimes authorise a business to collect donations on their behalf. For example, a supermarket may be authorised to accept a donation at the register that they then send onto the DGR. You can claim a deduction for a gift or donation you make in this way, if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>it meets the 4&nbsp;conditions above<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>you have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/businesses-and-organisations\/not-for-profit-organisations\/gifts-and-fundraising\/tax-deductible-donations\/keeping-a-record-of-your-donation#Receiptsfromthirdparties\">a receipt from the third party<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you receive a material benefit in return for your gift or donation to a DGR \u2013 for example, you purchase a ticket to a fundraising dinner \u2013 it&#8217;s considered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/businesses-and-organisations\/not-for-profit-organisations\/gifts-and-fundraising\/tax-deductible-donations\/is-it-a-gift-or-contribution#Contributions\">a contribution and extra conditions apply<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To claim a deduction, you must have a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ato.gov.au\/individuals-and-families\/income-deductions-offsets-and-records\/deductions-you-can-claim\/gifts-and-donations#Keepingrecordsforgiftsanddonations\">record of your donation<\/a>&nbsp;such as a receipt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ato-Whatisadeductiblegiftrecipient\"><strong>What is a deductible gift recipient?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A DGR is an organisation or fund that registers to receive tax deductible gifts or donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all charities are DGRs. For example, crowdfunding campaigns are a popular way to raise money for charitable causes. However, many of these crowdfunding websites are not run by DGRs.
